In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling fields, lived a shepherd boy. His being was mostly unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His main role was mainly to look after his flock of rams.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the gales among the solo tree on the mountaintop were his main associates. Day upon day, guarding his charges imbued in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.
However, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would here yearn for company. On one such day out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome plot.
Stories of predators prowling on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.
One day he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills to help but saw nothing threatening.
The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This prank persisted for a few days more. However, one day, a real wolf actually attack the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once broken, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was anciently.
